When to use AVIF
AVIF has the best compression of any format in common use today; photos come out at under 50% of the JPG size. All major browsers support it, so it is safe for images on your own website.
Encoding is slow — several seconds to over ten per image — and support in image editors is still limited. For distribution outside the web, use WebP or JPG.
Frequently asked questions
Conversion is slow
AVIF encoding needs more than ten times the computation of JPG or WebP. Shrinking large images first with the resize tool speeds it up.
Which quality should I use?
60–75 is enough for photos. AVIF holds up well even at lower quality settings.
Some software cannot open AVIF
Many image editors and office applications do not support it yet. For anything other than web display, use WebP or JPG.
Is transparency kept?
Yes. Converting from PNG to AVIF keeps transparency.

What is sent
The tool you used and the settings you chose (output format, quality, etc.), your device specs (GPU, memory, core count), the input format with a rough size, how many files succeeded or failed and how long it took, and the error type and details when something fails.
What is never sent
The files themselves, file names, text, subtitles or prompts you add to a video, and IP addresses. The data goes only to this site's own server, never to a third-party service.
